This is actually what a state of stress looks like. Baby crocodiles squeeze their eyes shut and freeze in order to say ‘I’m small and pathetic, please move on’ and to preserve the delicate organs that are their eyes.
Duolingo is a work of genius and practically very useful. But also TOTALLY WORTH IT for the hilarious sample sentences.
So far in Italian I have learned such useful phrases as “I have the bee!” and “He has a knife!” and “Your questions have no answer.”
My favourite from my duolingo experiences: “I have no life.”
Recently I’ve learned “I am a penguin” and “the duck reads the newspaper.” We’ve also had “the spider does not eat rice” and “my cat eats bread.”
There is actually really solid linguistic reasoning behind this! If you learn whole phrases that you would say in conversation, often you don’t actually learn the individual words, or how sentence structure and verb conjugation works. Plus people are more like to remember strange and funny sample sentences!
